Penetangore fielding Grade 4 and 5 groups this year

March 30, 2008 - The Penetangore Pipe Band is withdrawing its Grade 3 group from competition this year to focus on progressing its Grade 4 and 5 musicians. Faced with a dwindling Grade 3 roster and several members not able to commit to competition this year, the recommendation to withdraw Grade 3 was made by music director Jake Watson and accepted by the band's Board of Directors.

Penetangore's Grade 3 group was formed in 2006. In the two years it competed, it won four of nine competitions and racked up two seconds, a third, and a fourth. Nick Reid served as pipe major in 2006 and Ashleigh Weeden took over in 2007. Both have advised the music director that they are too busy with work and school to compete with the band this year.

"Our Grade 3 group was tiny, especially the drum corps," said Rob Liddle, band president. "With Zack (Miller) gone to the Frasers and Whitney (Bonnett) on her way to a new Grade 1 band with Craig (Colquhoun), we're down to the bare bones with side drummers and we’ve had a few pipers move on as well. We'll use this year to regroup and be stronger going forward."

Jake Watson remains as music director of Penetangore and will serve as an instructor for both the Grade 4 and 5 groups this season. Gerry Radford continues as drumming instructor and lead drummer of the Grade 4 group with Bill Millman as pipe major. Terry Mills remains as pipe major of the Grade 5 group with Deb Whithall as lead drummer. Bass drummer Brian Fry will play a senior role in the Grade 5 group, helping to bring new drummers along, while Robert Colquhoun plays bass with Grade 4.

Penetangore's first full-band commitment this year is on April 13 at the Supercities Walk for MS in Kincardine, Ontario. The band's Grade 5 group is scheduled to compete at the Hanover Games on April 26.

Penetangore drummers invited to join new Grade 1 band

Feb. 9, 2008 - Penetangore snare drummer Whitney Bonnett has been invited to try out for a new band based in Scotland that is forming to compete in the 2008 World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow this August.

Three-time World Bass Drum Champion Craig ‘Hoss' Colquhoun, a Penetangore mentor, will head up the new band's mid-section. Like Whitney, Craig is from Kincardine, Ontario, and got his start in the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band.

A press release on the National Piping Centre's website states the new band, yet unnamed, will be under the direction of Roddy MacLeod. Musicians also include Leading Drummer John Fisher, Willie McCallum, Angus MacColl, Alasdair Gillies, Jim McGillivray, Iain Speirs, Colin MacLellan, Jenny Hazzard, Simon McKerrell, Finlay MacDonald, Niall Stewart, Finlay Johnston, Stuart Samson, Robert Crozier, Wilson Brown and Simon Marshall.

" I asked both Gerry (Radford) and Whitney to join me in the mid-section," said Craig.

"Gerry is seriously busy at work; he is also firstly devoted to playing with Penetangore. Whitney deserves a chance to play in the big circle. She's a wonderful musician and I'm pleased that she has accepted my invitation."

Whitney is the fourth young musician to advance from the Penetangore ranks in recent years. Others include her sister, Lauren Bonnett, a tenor drummer with the Scottish Lion 78th Fraser Highlanders; Zack Miller, also with the Frasers; and Glenn Walpole, currently with the Peel Regional Police.

"Even though I'm taking a shot at Grade 1, I'm still planning on wearing purple this year, as well," said Whitney, in reference to the tartan worn by Penetangore.

Whitney will perform with both bands this year, taking her release from Penetangore in time to compete in the Worlds.

The novice Grade 5 squad placed fourth overall in a field of five bands but held their own against the other bands, according to McLeod.

"Our Grade 5 players didn't have the easiest of tunes and there were some nerves and mistakes, but nothing we can't correct over time."

Strong vocalists, musicians join in Penetangore Band fund-raiser
By Liz Dadson, Kincardine Independent

May 12, 2004 - If the "Drum Fanfare" is any indication, the Caledonia Connection fund-raiser concert by the Penetangore Pipe Band will be a treat for the senses.

The program, produced by pipe major Bill McLeod, features the band and guest vocalists and musicians. Among them are Border Crossing and the Strathspey and Reel Society.

"The show is 100-per-cent volunteer," says McLeod. "We've got some wonderful local talent and it's all based on a Scottish theme. The songs are familiar so people can sing along."

Ron Boucher is Master of Ceremonies, and piano accompaniment will be provided by Dave Hamilton, organist at the Kincardine United Church.

McLeod says the 40-member band has developed into two groups - a Grade 4 band and a Grade 5 band. They will be combined at the concert and joining them are guest players from the 78th Fraser Highlanders of Whitby.
Of note, is the "Drum Fanfare," put together by lead drummer Gerry Radford. To hear that is worth the price of a ticket.

All the money raised goes toward uniforms and equipment, as well as toward the cost of taking the band to the 2005 World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. It costs $1,700/person for band uniforms. The pipes are owned by the individual members, but eh chanters and Rosewood drums belong to the band.

"We're hoping to help defray the costs of going to Glasgow next year," says McLeod. "It's going to cost $1,000 per band member for airfare alone, plus accommodation, transportation and meals."

He hopes to take the entire pipe band to Bridge of Allen first, just outside Sterling, for competition so the band can get some good exposure prior to the world championships. There will be 250 bands at the worlds.

The band will be in competition June 12 in Georgetown, June 26 in Hamilton, July 2 in Kincardine, July 10 in Chatham, possibly Aug. 14 in Fergus, and Aug. 21 in Sarnia.
McLeod says the Caledonia Connection fund-raiser concert builds on the success of the Celtic fund-raiser held two years ago.

"We're hoping to sell out at the two performances," he says. "The long-term goal for Penetangore is to have Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 bands here."

The concert runs Saturday, May 22, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 23, at 1:30 p.m. at the Aztec Theatre, Kincardine. Tickets are $20 each and are available at Jerome Flowers, the Harp and Whistle, The Photo Shop and from Terry Reid and other band members.

McLeod says the major sponsor of the Penetangore Pipe Band is Bruce Power, but the band appreciates the many other local businesses that offer support.

Fergus concludes a competition season for Penetangore that saw the band performing at festivals in Chatham, Fort Erie, Georgetown and Kincardine. New to a circuit that includes bands that have been competing for decades, Penetangore managed to place third at Fort Erie with midde-of-the-pack performance at the other events.

"I'm very pleased with our progress," commented Penetangore Pipe Major Bill McLeod on the season. "Of course we would have liked to have been on the prize list more often, but we're knocking on the door and that's really something for a brand-new band.”

According to McLeod the band will take a small break to allow some of the senior members to travel to Scotland to the World Pipe Band Championships on Aug. 16 in support of the 78th Fraser Highlanders of Toronto. Penetangore's Lead Drummer Gerry Radford is a member of the 78th as well as McLeod's daughter, Emily, and other Bruce County residents including Craig Colquhoun, Tyler Fry, Reagan Jones, Bruce MacLean and Jake Watson. The 78th recently placed second at the 2003 North American Championship Pipe Band competition in Maxville, Ontario. E. McLeod came first at the event in solo professional rhythm tenor drumming.

On Aug. 16, a Penetangore mini-band is scheduled to make an impromptu performance at the Bruce Power community celebration in Port Elgin and then return to Kincardine to assume roles with the Kincardine Scottish for the Saturday night parade. Penetangore is also scheduled to perform at the opening of the Christian Faith Festival in Victoria Park on Sept. 7.

"We're planning to hold another fundraising concert in Kincardine in the spring," advised McLeod. "The last one in 2002 sold out before many people could get tickets so maybe this time we'll host an evening performance and a matinee. The support we've had from this community has been fantastic."

Penetangore was formed in Sept. 2001 and wears corporate tartan provided by Bruce Power. The 2003 season was the band's first year as a registered competitor in the Pipers and Pipe Band Society of Ontario. More information about the band can be found on the web site www.penetangore.netfirms.com.

The Halton Regional Police band won first place in the Grade 4 pipe band competition which featured 11 bands from cities that included Cleveland, Chicago, Guelph, Sault Ste. Marie and Windsor. The Grade 1, 2 and 3 categories were won by Peel Regional Police, North Coast (Ohio) and Dofasco (Hamilton), respectively. In all, 25 pipe bands participated in the event.

New drums for Penetangore Pipe Band

July 7, 2003 - Kincardine's competition pipe band, Penetangore, placed fourth in the Grade 4 category at the Kincardine Scottish Festival on July 5. Members of the band also performed well in solo competitions with Lauren Bonnet winning first in novice tenor drumming, Brian Fry first in amateur bass drumming, Kyle MacDonald first in Grade 4 march piping, Colby Bellan second in Grade 4 snare drumming and Jennifer Prince second in amateur tenor drumming.

Prior to the contest, sponsors and supporters gathered to unveil new drums that arrived from England earlier in the week. Cartier Planners Financial Services, Ontario Power Generation, the Power Workers' Union, Hepcoe, the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, and the Optimists Club all contributed funds in 2001 that were used to place the order for the hand-crafted, rosewood drums. Bruce Power became a major sponsor in 2002 by contributing corporate tartan as well as the cost of manufacturing the band's kilts. The company also provided assistance with the band's logo and new heads for the bass drum.

"It was a long wait but it was worth it," said Brian Fry, bass drummer and treasurer of Penetangore. "We've been playing with a hodgepodge of borrowed and personal instruments since we started up. These new drums should really contribute to the drum corps's performance."

The drums were designed by local drum master Craig Colquhoun who drummed with the Kincardine Scottish in the 1970s and then the Bruce County Junior Pipe Band. Now a drummer with the famed 78th Fraser Highlanders of Toronto, Colquhoun is contracted by Premier Drums of Leicester, England to research, design and develop percussion instruments.

"When we're at festivals competing, it's amazing the number of people who see our banner and come up to chat about Kincardine and how they've been there or are planning to return," said Fry. "It's nice to be out there promoting the community in such a way and it is our sponsors that help make this possible."

One of the new snare drums was featured in a service at the United Church on Sunday, July 6 by Penetangore's Colby Bellan who took part in the Highland Cathedral tune with pipers Hannah Liddle, Kyle MacDonald and Glenn Walpole. So far this year, Penetangore has performed at Ontario Place and competed at festivals in Georgetown, Fort Erie and Kincardine. The band will compete at highland games in Chatham on July 12 and in Fergus on August 9.

Penetangore with the best at Fort Erie

June 23, 2003 - Kincardine's competition pipe band Penetangore placed third at the Loch Sloy Canadian Championship Highland Games in Fort Erie on June 22.

Competing against 14 other Grade 4 bands, Penetangore came first in ensemble, eighth in drumming, and sixth in pipes which placed them third overall in the contest. The corporate-coloured tartan of Bruce Power worn by the band was displayed with tartan worn by 45 other bands at the event including competition bands from Boston, Cleveland, Halifax, New York, Toronto and Washington. The Hamilton Police Pipes & Drums placed first in the Grade 4 competition and the Guelph Pipe Band placed second. Penetangore edged out the Syracuse Scottish Pipe Band for third prize.

"Today was a great experience and confidence builder for everyone to know that we can go out there and play with the best in our grade," said Penetangore Pipe Sergeant Bill Millman.

Penetangore solo players competed in pouring rain and cool weather but still managed outstanding performances with pipers Kyle MacDonald and Andy Millman placing in the top three of their contests. MacDonald came second in Grade 4 march-piping while A. Millman, at the Grade 2 level, won first in Strathspey & Reel, second in 2/4 march and second in jig. Bass drummer Brian Fry competed in one of the final events of the day, Amateur Bass, but the results have not been announced. Fry, mentored by Lead Drummer Gerry Radford, placed first in the category at the Georgetown Highland games on June 14.

"We're looking forward to Kincardine," said Pipe Major Bill McLeod, in reference to the Scottish Highland Games to be held July 5. "The music selection is more difficult than Fort Erie and we'll need to be on our toes to give a good performance. The home town support will be exciting."
